Oral Cancer Screening
If you notice any of the following symptoms, book an appointment with DoubleTree Dental right away:
- A sore in the mouth or lip that will not heal
- A lump on the lip or inside the mouth
- Swelling of the jaw
- Difficulty or pain when chewing or swallowing
- A white or red patch on the gums or tongue
How can I prepare?
Oral cancer screening does not require any special preparations. Our screenings are typically performed during routine dental exams.
What can I expect?
During a screening, your dentist will look inside the mouth for small patches or sores. Using gloved hands, we will also feel the tissues in your mouth to check for lumps or other abnormalities. If you wear dentures, you’ll be asked to remove them so the dentist can inspect your gums.
What happens next?
Should we discover any signs of oral cancer or precancerous lesions, we’ll book a follow-up exam in the next few weeks. During this follow-up, we’ll check if the abnormality is still present and whether it has changed over time.
A biopsy procedure may also be recommended. This procedure involves removing a cell sample for laboratory testing to determine if cancer is present. The biopsy may be performed at our dental clinic, or the patient may be referred to an outside specialist.
As mentioned earlier, oral cancer can be treated successfully if detected early on. Be sure to visit us regularly for dental exams, so our team can identify the warning signs. Good oral health is crucial in maintaining your general wellbeing. So rely on DoubleTree Dental to provide you with the care your mouth deserves.
